Powers of a Matrix and Combinatorial Identities

In this article we obtain a general polynomial identity in k variables, where k ≥ 2 is an arbitrary positive integer. We use this identity to give a closed-form expression for the entries of the powers of a k × k matrix. Finally, we use these results to derive various combinatorial identities.

On Fractional Hadamard Powers of Positive Block Matrices

Entrywise powers of matrices have been well-studied in the literature, and have recently received renewed attention due to their application in the regularization of highdimensional correlation matrices. In this paper, we study powers of positive semidefinite block matrices (Hst) n s,t=1 where each block Hst is a complex m × m matrix. We first characterize the powers α ∈ R such that the blockwi...

Eigenvalues of Hadamard powers of large symmetric Pascal matrices

Let Sn be the positive real symmetric matrix of order n with (i, j ) entry equal to ( i + j − 2 j − 1 ) , and let x be a positive real number. Eigenvalues of the Hadamard (or entry wise) power S n are considered. In particular for k a positive integer, it is shown that both the Perron root and the trace of S n are approximately equal to 4 4k−1 ( 2n− 2 n− 1 )k . © 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights r...

On the powers of a matrix with perturbations

Let A be a matrix of order n. The properties of the powers A k of A have been extensively studied in the literature. This paper concerns the perturbed powers where the E k are perturbation matrices. We will treat three problems concerning the asymptotic behavior of the perturbed powers. First, determine conditions under which P k ! 0. Second, determine the limiting structure of P k. Third, inve...

Powers of Two Modulo Powers of Three

Since 2 is a primitive root of 3 for each positive integer m, the set of points {(n, 2 mod 3) : n > 0}, viewed as a subset of Z>0×Z>0 is bi-periodic, with minimal periods φ(3) (horizontally) and 3 (vertically). We show that if one considers the classes of n modulo 6, one obtains a finer structural classification. This result is presented within the context of the question of strong normality of...
